When buying a used truck, it’s important that you consider what you will be using your truck for a majority of the time and what you value when it comes to performance, technology, design, and more. Having an understanding of what is truly important in regards to features will help you spend money on the things that truly matter while not wasting money on features you may never use.

There are a wide variety of used trucks available, so it won’t be difficult to find the right used truck for you in the right price range. Our list of some of the best available used trucks include models that were designed in the last five years and offers a variety of prices, performance capabilities, and available features.

Nissan Frontier

2015 nissan frontier

The Nissan Frontier is the smallest and most affordable of all the midsize trucks on this list. The 2015 and 2016 models are great for anyone looking for a smaller truck than can handle rough terrains. The Pro-4X trim features a 4.0-liter V6 engine that is capable of towing up to 6,500 lbs. The interior features a simple, yet functional design which includes fold-up rear seats, available NissanConnect with smartphone integration, and available leather seats.

The 2017 model features a new S Work Truck Package that includes bed rail caps, splash guards, a spray-in bed-liner, and rubber floor mats.

The 2018 Nissan Frontier features more available standard features, such as a standard rearview camera on all models, as well as a new Midnight Edition. The base S features standard air conditioning, cruise control, a 5-inch color display, Bluetooth, and Siri Eyes Free. The Midnight Edition is probably our favorite design yet with a gloss-black grille, 18-inch black aluminum wheels, black step rails, body color bumpers, black badging, black outside mirrors, and black door handles.

A used 2015 Nissan Frontier can be found in the $12,000 range but quickly escalates in price with newer models.

If you are looking for a midsize truck that can perform like a truck but drives like a car, then the Chevrolet Colorado is perfect for you. This midsize truck is known for its spacious cabins, good fuel economy (19 city / 26 hwy), comfortable car-like ride, and its ability to handle heavy duty jobs when properly equipped.

The 2015 Colorado was a new addition to the midsize truck lineup and features a 3.6-liter V6 engine capable of 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. When equipped with the V6 and the Z82 Trailering Package, any of the Colorado model years are capable of towing up to 7,000 lbs. Used 2015 Chevrolet Colorados can be found in the $12,000 price range.

For a slightly higher price range of around $13,000, you can get a 2016 Chevrolet Colorado that features an improved driver information display, Apple CarPlay, and an optional 2.8-liter turbo diesel I-4 engine.
For the 2017 and 2018 model years, you will find a slightly more powerful V6 engine, new exterior colors, available heated side mirrors, and an Active Tow feature.

GMC Canyon

The GMC Canyon doesn’t offer as high of a towing capacity as the Chevrolet Colorado, but is perfect for anyone looking for a bold design and won’t be doing a lot of heavy towing. Features include a boxier design with a bolder grille and a more luxurious Denali trim.

The 2015 GMC Canyon features an optional 302-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 engine, a fully-boxed ladder frame, optional four-wheel drive, and outfitted bed options. A fair price for a used 2015 Canyon can be found in the $12,500 range.

The 2017 GMC Canyon featured the most upgrades that include a revised 3.6-liter V6 with an eight-speed automatic transmission, an available Trailer Brake Control with the V6, new exterior colors, a 7-inch touchscreen, a standard Teen Driver feature, a luxurious Denali trim, and the Nightfall Edition that features a body-colored grille, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a spray-on bed-liner. An All-Terrain X Package was also featured that includes all-terrain tires, hill descent control, all-weather floor mats, and an off-road suspension.

At a slightly higher fair market price of $14,493, a used 2017 GMC Canyon will provide you with more options and features.

Toyota Tacoma

2016 Toyota Tacoma

If you are an adventurer or just want a midsize truck you can rely on to last, the Toyota Tacoma is known for its reliability and durability, and is great on rough terrain.

The 2015 Tacoma featured the addition of the TRD Pro Series trim, which became the truck to own for off-roading. The TRD comes equipped with a 5.7-liter V8, 4WD, a TRD cat-back exhaust system, a quarter-inch-thick aluminum front skid plate, and 18-inch TRD wheels.

The 2016 Toyota Tacoma boasts even more upgrades with a new 3.5-liter V6 engine, a new automatic transmission, and an updated infotainment system that includes a 6.1-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, a rearview camera, and Siri Eyes Free. The 2016 and 2017 models can be found in the $16,000-$19,000 price range.

The 2017 model features even more exciting upgrades in a slightly more expensive price range of $20,300. The TRD Pro trim is reintroduced and features a specialized off-roaring suspension, Fox internal bypass shocks, 16-inch TRD black alloy wheels, a TRD front skid plate, and Rigid Industries LED fog lights.

If you are wanting the best safety and driver assist features, the 2018 Tacoma features the Toyota Safety Sense-P safety suite as a standard on all trims.
